When I have a goal that seems improbable, it’s often because my daily actions aren’t aligned with what I want to achieve.
It’s easy to kid ourselves into thinking we’re doing more than we are. Or to blame outside events, other people or individual circumstances. But if we’re honest with ourselves, we’re likely not taking the right steps needed to move the needle forward. It’s often ourselves that are getting in the way.
I find it helpful to ask myself ‘Am I doing the best I can despite my current circumstances?’ And more often than not, the answer is no.
An example of this would be wanting to lose weight, but not always eating the healthy foods that would get me there.
Another example would be wanting to take up a new hobby, but then spending half an hour browsing the internet and then saying I don’t have the time.
In other words, I’m not having success because there’s a lack of consistency between my goals and my actual behaviour.
Maybe you can relate. What do you think about your current daily actions? Are they mostly congruent with your goals?
There have been many times when I’ve gone off track. But overall, I’m much better now at being mindful about my actions.
A simple trick I’ve found helpful is this…
When you’re about to take an action, ask yourself ’Is this going to move me closer to my goal or further away from it?'
Since your goal is important to you, you’ll be amazed how quickly that heavy dessert or bright shiny object loses its appeal.
